Perinatal distress was measured using the EPDS (scores of 10–12) and probable perinatal depression was measured using the EPDS (scores of 13 or more). Logistic regression models that adjusted for confounding variables were used to investigate a range of psychosocial and obstetric determinants and perinatal distress and depression. Results: Eight percent of this cohort experienced antenatal distress and about 5 % experienced postnatal distress. Approximately 6 % experienced probable antenatal depression and 3 % experienced probable postnatal depression. Being from a culturally and linguistically diverse background (AOR = 2.0, 95% CI 1.8–2.3, P< 0.001), a lack of partner support (AOR = 2.9, 95% CI 2.3–3.7) and a maternal history of childhood abuse (AOR = 1.9, 95% CI 1.6–2.3) were associated with antenatal distress. These associations were similar in women with probable antenatal depression. Women who scored 10 to12 on antenatal EPDS assessment had a 4.5 times higher odds (95% CI 3.4–5.9, P< 0.001) of experiencing probable postnatal depression compared with women scoring 9 or less. Conclusion: Antenatal distress is more common than antenatal depressive symptoms and postnatal distress or depression. Antenatal maternal distress was associated with probable postnatal depression. Scale properties of the EPDS allows risk-stratification of women in the antenatal period, and earlier intervention with preventively focused programs. Prevention of postnatal depression could address a growing burden of illness and long-term complications for mothers and their infants.]]> Wed 22 Mar 2023 18:26:16 AEDT ]]> The mediating role of resilience and its facets in the association between mindfulness and psychological health https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:36487 Wed 20 May 2020 15:44:49 AEST ]]> Understanding motivation for Australian adolescents and young adults with cystic fibrosis: Modifiable factors to support self-management https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:47108 Wed 14 Dec 2022 10:05:30 AEDT ]]> Interventions to improve screening and appropriate referral of patients with cancer for distress: systematic review protocol https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:20993 Wed 11 Apr 2018 15:59:54 AEST ]]> Risk and risk management for Australian sex workers https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:15705 Wed 11 Apr 2018 12:26:53 AEST ]]> Nursing responses and interventions for episodes of adolescent distress in an acute child and adolescent mental health inpatient unit: an interpretive descriptive study https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31088 Wed 11 Apr 2018 11:53:18 AEST ]]> Which items on the distress thermometer problem list are the most distressing? https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:25870 Wed 06 Apr 2022 14:03:12 AEST ]]> A qualitative study investigating Australian cancer service outpatients’ experience of distress screening and management: what is the personal relevance, acceptability and improvement opportunities from patient perspectives? https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:47065 Tue 30 Apr 2024 09:57:14 AEST ]]> Primary outcomes data from a cross-sectional study exploring how well cancer survivor self-classifications of anxiety, depression and stress agree with a standardised tool https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:35557 Tue 17 Sep 2019 15:40:09 AEST ]]> Distress levels in patients with oropharyngeal vs. non-oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck over 1 year after diagnosis: a retrospective cohort study https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37267 Tue 15 Sep 2020 13:12:20 AEST ]]> What are the sources of distress in a range of cancer caregivers?: a qualitative study https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46180 n = 14) were aged from 25 to 80 years, including two bereaved caregivers. The relationships of the caregivers to the patients were as follows: partner (n = 8), parent (n = 1), child (n = 3), sibling (n = 1), and friend (n = 1). Six major themes emerged in relation to sources of distress: (1) a lack of sufficient and timely information; (2) uncertainty; (3) the role and duties of caregiving; (4) lack of family-centred services; (5) practical challenges; and (6) impact of distress. Conclusion: Caregivers face a number of specific challenges beyond those experienced by patients.
